Sew over it.

Sometimes, things don't work out. Sometimes, you just need to channel your inner, "not-amused" Kristen Stewart (does she ever actually look happy? If you find one where she does, it's fake.) and face facts. This blouse is not working, and there's no point in even hemming it.

yes, we hang laundry to dry on the shower curtain rod in this house.

dirty, smudged mirror!

Ugh, at least my nails are gold and sparkly, haha. SOMETHING cheerful. Anyway, these bust darts are not happening, the armholes are too large and gapey, the center seam is ripply like fried bacon (fail on really capturing it in these photos), the back NECKLINE is a saggy blob, the whole dang thing looks wrinkly and sloppy beyond belief, AND I AM NOT AMUSED. The end.

Moving on! (why does this keep happening?) Perhaps I'll revisit the Jasmine blouse by Colette Patterns at a later date, but right now I'm over it. On to new and exciting things. Like mending the mr's  sweater that has been sitting in my to-mend pile for...a year?

Also, maybe starting a new project for me soon. Updates to come...

  1. You do Kristen Stewart very well. Did you try giving the shirt a good steam? I would imagine the answer is yes, but I thought I'd ask! Steam worked wonders on the last bias-cut top I was making.

  2. Sorry that didn't turn out for you. This is the first negative review I've heard of a Colette pattern--you rebel! A rebel kind of like Kristen Stewart in the Twilight series. ;)

  3. 1) Kirsten Stewart - can't stand her sour face. What's your problem bitch!??!?!?! Can't believe he took her back.

    2) When I used to have a shower curtain for the bathtub I used to dry my clothes the same :) Now I can only hang my undergarments on the shower screen :(

    3) What if you try wearing the blouse with a high waisted skirt? I think it would get rid of the looseness... I think the blouse looks fine :) and it would be a shame to let the collar go to waste.

4)I know what it's like to make meh items... I've had a few lately too, it sucks but it happens to all of us :)

    1. Sigh, I do like the collar... maybe I'll try to salvage it later.

  4. Hi, I don't thinnk it looks that bad. Agree with the pressing but I'm guessing you've already done that. It's sooooo disappointing but it happens... doesn't it.
    Onward and upward.
Next fabulous project! Be kind to yourself. You've been doing some amazing things.

  5. You know, I reckon it looks alright! It would look good tucked into a high-waisted skirt or pants.
It could be the fabric that makes it a bit 'bunny-ears' but I reckon the shape really suits you!
Love your attitude in this photo, I'm a little bit scared and a little bit excited all in one :)

  6. I'm with the others, tucked in it might look great? What's good is that you're looking at it with a view to improving the fit next time....not that you're rushing to get another version underway just yet! And they really do look like tweaks as opposed to major redraftings...

  7. I didn't see anything wrong with the blouse at first, and i hardly noticed the "flaws" after you pointed them out. maybe taking in the shoulder seam a bit, not much, would help with the loose neck and the armholes. and the darts might just need a good press or re-sewing the pointy ends..and the rippling in the front seam is just due to not being shaped like a clothes hanger.
other than that, you have mastered the kristen stewart face well, maybe you should move on to the "not impressed mckayla" :D

  8. It's colette patterns, not you. I had all the exact same issues with the jasmin blouse, even after I downsized one and took in all the gape-iness. I was wondering when you said you'd be sewing this next whether you'd have the same problems as me... and I dumped it soon after my second muslin. Blergh!!

  9. Haha! Kristen Stewart is a great mystery to me. A fairly pretty girl with that eternally irriated, who farted, down turned mouth face. Outside of "Bella", who thinks she is good for their part...and why?!
Anyhoo, I didn't think the shirt was that bad. The only thing that stood out was the large armholes. But, after you point it all out, I see why you don't like it. I'm really hard on myself when it comes to the stuff I create. I don't want it to look "OK", because I can just go buy cheap "OK" fitting clothes just about anywhere. So, even though it's really not that horrible, I understand and I won't try to change your mind ;)
And mending...blah. I also have a pile of clothes that need to be hemmed/mended/altered. I don't know why but I HATE that kind of stuff.

  10. I agree that it doesn't look so bad. But I know photos sometimes don't capture the reality. If you're not happy with it, just move on :) I love your face in the photos, tee hee :)

  11. Before I even read your descriptions, I saw the pictures and thought Kristen Stewart! Excellent impersonation!

I know what it's like to make a garment that seems okay in picture, but when you're wearing it you just feel blah because you know what's wrong with it...so sorry that your time and fabric investment didn't work out! At least your nails are fab!

  12. I had the same problem with the Jasmine. I kept having to alter the curve at the center seam to fix the shelf-like crease it made at my boobs. I had to completely hack off that weird curve at the top of the back because I looked like a hunchback. Now it's sitting waiting for me to fix the line-backer looking shoulders and hem it. I did stick with it and I have put hours into that top because I love the design and really wanted to get it right to make more. Basically - I feel your pain. I haven't touched it in about a month and every time I look at it I feel guilty. Oh well, maybe one of these days...

  13. Fitting Colette patterns can be a bear! I just got this pattern the other day. I don't think it looks bad but I know how you feel when you have something that just doesn't look right to you. Tuck it in a wear a cardigan over it, or do like I would toss it in the ever growing UFO pile. lol. Oh K Stewart, she's so overrated. My husband calls her "the mouth breather" she always has that same look on her face like she can't breath or she just smelled a fart.

  14. I've tried 2 muslins of this pattern and have come up with something awful each time. After reading several blogs of people who have made it, I think the key to this one is to use your high bust measurement and really check the dart placement, especially if you have to do an FBA. Using the high bust measurement will usually put you in a smaller size and that helps with the armhole gapes. It will also mean that the shoulders fit better, and then you can correct the bust from there. From what I can see in the pics it definitely looks like your darts are too low, and I think that's a problem with the pattern, not with your version. Remember, too, that these are drafted for a C-cup, so if you're smaller than that you might need to do a SMA (or if you're bigger you'll need an FBA on this) which will also help with the darts. I'm going to start the 3rd muslin of mine and this time I'm going to check the shoulder measurements before I cut out, plus I'm going to use my high bust measurement to get the right size.

  15. I think the collar looks great, and any arm gaping is at an acceptable level you'd find in RTW clothes but maybe see if you can tweak the darts a little without chewing up the fabric. And then away you go!
I love the collar on this pattern but will never make it cos I loathe centre seams. now im pulling a K-Stew face :-|

  16. Oh boo! But you do an amazing 'unimpressed' face.

I have this pattern but have been a little scared to make it - I have seen some lovely versions but I have equally had a real problem getting some of the Colette Patterns to fit me well. One day I will man up and try it. Hope you get yours sorted x

  17. Oh K-Stew... such a sour-puss. That girl is like the embodiment of all the teenage angst in the world rolled into one glum-faced would-be-could-be-starlet.
Now onto the shirt! It seems to me like you're just having some typical bias-cut issues. The center front ripple is very very familiar to me! If you choose to revisit this top later I would suggest hand-basting it together first, then let it hang out for awhile (perhaps from the shower rod - seems like an appropriate place to hang garments to me!) then adjusting the fit (since the bias will stretch and warp). Use a longer stitch length on the long seams that tend to buckle, like the CF.
All that being said, however, I actually think this top looks quite pretty on you! I would steam the darts and see what that does, but overall, it's not that bad! Maybe sleep on it? Or in it? Just kidding...or not...

  18. You may have the same problem that I have had with Colette Patterns, there is too much length in the upper torso, in front from the bust dart to shoulder. In my case my back neck to waist measurement is about 14.5-15" instead of the standard 16" so that is why I ended up with a hunchback. that's the main reason I need to make a bodice block then I could place that over a bodice pattern and know right away to fix it.

  19. I had a similar experience with the Jasmine darts. I never really figured out if it was because I picked the wrong size, that colette is drafted for a larger cup, or that because it was on the bias that it would stretch and drag the dart down. To compare, I had the same problem on my Taffy blouse from the book which is also cut on the bias. And it was funny, depending on how I stood, the darts would look ok and then in other ways they'd be all droopy. In both cases I had to super-press the points. Perhaps you could add some back neck darts and shorten the back of the collar to avoid the sagging? not that you're in any mood to keep working on this ;)

oh and your k.stew comment reminds me of this blog: http://rpattzhateshislife.tumblr.com/ it's basically a bunch of gifs about robert pattinson's secret hatred for twilight (and his own existence) and how he's constantly subtly bashing his own movies. it seems like stewart isn't the only one who is constantly disappointed.

  22. I had the same issues with Jasmine. I was so disappointed because Macaroon fit me perfectly right out of the envelope.
