More Frock Festing & ...More!

Hey, y'all. I'm back, and as promised I've got photos of me wearing my latest project - New Look 6000, sewn for Scruffy Badger's Frock Fest. Tom helped me out as cameraman for these, but it seems that no amount of photography talent on his part can help me be less awkward when posing for blog photos. Enjoy!

(my go-to pose)

"..should I look off to the side, like this...??"

(trying something different...)

(looking in the mirror)

"what about this?"

(cuffs close-up)

"Sue, look over your shoulder." - "ohhh, like this?"

(grab the cat as a diversion)

(much better;  just look at grumpy Duke)

I promise to keep practicing posing... and sharing all of my awkward results along the way. Some day, I'll be more polished (and will even remember to brush my hair before throwing myself in front of the camera). Anyway, I wasn't expecting it at all, but I've fallen completely in love with this dress. I've already worn it to work once and can't wait to wear it again!

In other news, I'm about to embark on an exciting vacation, which I'll try to share with you via iPad/smartphone blog posts. Bear with me, there's a learning curve there.

ALSO -- the adorable (and quirky) Sally of The Quirky Peach has included me as one of the bloggers she's passing her Leibster Award on to. Thanks, girl!

Firstly, can we just take a second to note how cute the Liebster Award has become? When I was awarded it in the past, it was rather drab-looking, if you ask me.

But moving right along now. Onto the survey! I'm going to be a rule breaker here, guys. Instead of nominating 11 bloggers to pass this baby on to, since I did that the first time around, I'm just going to ask that you, my lovely readers, chime in below in the comments to share some of your own responses to the following questions:

1. What is your favorite thing you have ever sewn?
I'm afraid that's a tie between my Holiday Dress, and Gathered Skirt. They've been my latest favorites to wear.

2. Do you tend to sew more for yourself or others?
Definitely myself. The last thing I sewed from scratch for someone else was a button-up shirt for Tom, that's since been deconstructed and nearly completely abandoned. I do, however, do most of my mending for others, and just a little bit for myself.

3. What is one thing you love about where you live?
I can WALK to places, like lots of restaurants and bars (i.e. no drinking and driving) and shops. I do wish there was an exciting fabric/sewing store close-by. That's something that my area is sorely lacking.

4. Do you listen to music while you sew? If so, what kind?
Sometimes. When I do, it's usually some Kate Nash, Lily Allen, Nicole Atkins, Adele, Feist... or whatever other (girly) tune strikes my fancy.

5. What is your dream project to sew?
A skirt-suit inspired by Dior's New Look. Who knows when I'll get around to it, though. Someday!

6. When did you start sewing?
I... don't quite know. I stitched by hand a lot of little doll and Barbie clothes when I was young. I also worked on a few mom-daughter projects, where my mom did all of the difficult parts of sewing something for me to wear, and I hopped in front of the machine for a couple of straight-stitching parts, then claimed equal credit for sewing the garment.

I've always liked making things in some way or another, but it wasn't until I re-taught myself to sew in 2010 that I became obsessed with sewing my clothes.

7. What is your favorite kind of fabric to sew with?
I find myself wanting to buy lots of drapey Rayons for clothes-sewing, but then not enjoying sewing them as much as something like cotton sateen. Maybe someday, I'll even sew something with the pretty silk that's been sitting in my stash forEVER, but I'm still a little intimidated.

8. What do you do if you get in a sewing funk?
Pack up all of my half-finished projects, organize my space, stay away from the sewing area for a few days, then throw open the drawers/closet/boxes and pour over everything to find a quick project. It doesn't always work, but I've had some success. Oh, and reading lots of other blogs helps, too. It seems like there's always someone out there making something that inspires me.

9. If you could be any fictional character (movie, book, etc) who would it be?
Hmm...I know I'm ignoring some perfect, clever answer that's somewhere in my brain from all of the books I've read over the years, but lately I find myself just wanting to be Jess from the New Girl for a day. ALL of her clothes are adorable. And she has a sewing machine.

10. What is always at the top of your grocery list?
Scones! We buy them weekly from Trader Joe's and I eat one with coffee every morning at my desk when I get to work. I make a point to alternate every week between blueberry and cranberry to avoid getting sick of one flavor.

11. Who is your biggest fan?
My Mom & Dad (Hi guys!) - they think everything I sew is super cool, even if it's heinously ugly. Tom is right up there too, obviously, what with sticking around to take photos of me for the blog while I flop around in front of the camera. Thanks guys!
Duke? not so much a fan. Just look at his face in that last photo. :(

And now I turn the questions over to you all.
Do we have anything in common? Are we opposites? Are there any other questions you'd have me answer?

Accolades

Exciting news!!

Today I've been featured on Colette Patterns' blog as this week's Featured Seamstress. I feel so legit!

Also, I want to give a big thank you to these lovely ladies: Neeno of Sew Me Love, Marie of A Sewing Odyssey, and Leah of Struggle Sews a Straight Seam for passing the Sunshine Award on to me!

Per the requirements that go along with the award, here are a few of my favorite things:
  • Favorite color: teal (can you tell from my blog??)
  • Favorite animal: a tie between sloths and kitties!
  • Favorite number:  18 - my birthday is the 18th
  • Favorite non-alcoholic drink: iced tea -- sweet or un-sweet
  • Facebook or Twitter:  facebook -- I'm not cool or exciting enough for twitter ;)
  • My passion: um, sewing? ...and old things
  • Favorite pattern: I don't have a favorite sewing pattern, yet. I have a favorite fabric pattern, though -- polka dots! (duh)
  • Favorite day of the week: Friday -- you can stay up late (sewing!) and you know you've got the whole weekend ahead of you
  • Getting or giving presents: I love giving presents. I keep a section in my little notebook that's always with me for gift ideas for my friends/family, so I can jot ideas down whenever they come to me.
  • Favorite flower:  ranunculus
  • Favorite celebrity role model: I don't know if I have a role model, per se, but I have major girl crushes on Adele, Alison Brie, Katy Perry, and Zooey Deschanel.

Also, a shout out to Frau Tipmatic! She's awarded me the Versatile Blogger award. What a doll! You can check out the list of seven random facts about me here, from when it was passed on to me before.

I think I'm supposed to pass these awards on to a whole list of other bloggers (10ish for the Sunshine and 15 for the Versatile??), but, in rather un-sunshiney fashion (oops!), I'm going to ignore that and simply direct you over to my favorite blogs on the left side of the page. Please take a second to look them over and click on one or two you've not visited before! (I really do read them like it's my job)  :)

Thanks everyone!!

A blog award

The lovely Tina over at Down the Retro Rabbit Hole has nominated me for The Versatile Blogger Award - thanks, Tina!! Here are the rules:
  1. Add the badge to the winning blog page.
  2. Thank the blogger who gave it.
  3. List the rules.
  4. List seven (7) random facts about yourself.
  5. Pass on the award to fifteen (15) deserving and conscientious bloggers who are nominated for their diligence, demonstrated skill, and achievements in the world of blogging and specifically in the sewing related category.
  6. Contact the nominated bloggers and let them know they are recipients.
I really am honored to accept this award, but can I just say that thinking up seven facts about myself is kind of daunting in itself...and then I get to decide on fifteen of my favorite bloggers to pass it on to? Is there an award for successfully accepting this award? :)

Anyway, enough complaining about privileged problems and on to my seven random facts!
  •  I love sloths. Probably on the same level as Kristen Bell.
  •  I absolutely abhor, loathe, and detest stink bugs. They are so sneaky and just want to be ON MY STUFF! Blech. They fill me with rage and have been the bane of my existence ever since they infested my apartment during my senior year of college.
  • I played softball in high school, some first base but mostly center field. My parents attended most of the games and my dad took approximately 239475994 photos of me doing all sorts of softball stuff. So, that's documented in case you didn't believe me.
  • I worked at Starbucks for five years and am (creepily) really interested in knowing what drinks my coworkers/friends/acquaintances/people I see on the street have ordered...and why.
  • I was a history major, but don't ask me to act like a history buff, 'cause I'm not one! I loved learning about history but can't readily recite facts.
  • I am obsessed with checking Craigslist (as I've kind of mentioned before) and monitor it daily to see if there are any deals on sewing stuff in my area. Just today I found a sewing machine for $20 for my friend, Steph, and I'm going to help her get started sewing. Yay!
  • My favorite movie is Bye Bye, Birdie. Watch it.
And here are my nominees for The Versatile Blogger Award, in no particular order:

Ruffles & Whiskers
Sew Me Love
Poppykettle
Stitch and Witter
Struggle Sews a Straight Seam
Lladybird
Su Sews So-So
Curves, Patterns, and Pins
Seams Sustainable
Splatastic
Erika Made It
Kestrel Finds and Makes
Sew *seam-rip* repeat
Lucky Lucille
Scruffy Badger Time

These are some of my very favorite blogs out there, so check them out if they're new to you!

Another Liebster!

So, you know how Suzie awarded me the Liebster Blog Award a few days ago? Well now I have my new best friend, Melanie of poppykettle, to thank for picking me as one of her five recipients! Shut the front door!! - right? I'm so grateful to these lovely ladies.

(I've already named my five recipients who I've passed the award on to, so, as recommended, I'll refrain from going through the whole process again.)

In hopes of not sounding too mushy/gushy/sappy, I just want to proclaim my giddy appreciation to the world! I am so grateful to be part of this online sewing community! This network of awesome bloggers/sewists has provided me with so much inspiration, so many helpful tips and tutorials, and has been so supportive - don't let me get all teary-eyed here (I almost typed all of those "so"s as "sew" -- yeah.).

But really, you guys fill my real-life-sewing-friends void! I can't tell you how amazing it feels to find like-minded ladies who are just as sewing-crazed as I am and are willing to listen to (read about) my obsessed ramblings on sewing and vintage anything. A big THANK YOU to you all!

Since I'm not giving out any more awards, here's a ridiculously delicious-looking cookie recipe I plan to try out this weekend: OREO-STUFFED chocolate-chip cookies!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy :)

Liebster Blog Award

I was picked for a blog award, you guys!! I know, I can't believe it either. Suzie of the charming  and inspiring blog Su Sews So-So, (yes, this could easily be the name of my blog, strong emphasis on the so-so part for me, ha!) has picked me as one of her five recipients whom she's passing this award on to. Thank you, Suzie! I'm so flattered that you thought of little old me.

"The origins of the Liebster Blog Award are somewhat unclear but the general consensus is that it means favourite or dearest to showcase bloggers with fewer than 200 followers."

And it comes with the following ‘rules’:

1 - thank your liebster blog award presenter on your blog.
2 - link back to the blogger who presented the award to you.
3 - copy/paste the blog award on your blog.
4 - present the liebster blog award to 5 blogs (with 200 followers or less).
5 - let them know they have been chosen by leaving a comment.

I know this is a common 'problem,' but I follow a heck of a lot of blogs, so narrowing down my favorites, with under 200 followers, was tricky. Also, it can be kind of difficult to tell just how many followers a blog has - just saying.

That being said, and desperately hoping none of them have already been awarded the Liebster without my noticing, here's what I came up with (drum-roll, please):

I am so inspired by all of these ladies! Make sure to check them out if you haven't already.
